Sergey Korolev
Chief Designer of the Soviet Space Program
Sergey Pavlovich Korolev (1907–1966) was a Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer, often called
the
father
of practical astronautics. He led the development of the R-7 rocket and the first artificial satellite,
Sputnik 1,
as well as the Vostok program that sent Yuri Gagarin into space.
